Škoda’s Latest Entry in the Sub-4-Metre Segment

Škoda Auto has officially unveiled its new subcompact crossover SUV, the Škoda Kylaq, which is specifically designed for the Indian market. This launch marks a significant milestone as the company enters the highly competitive sub-4-metre segment.

Design and Platform

The Škoda Kylaq is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB A0 platform, which it shares with models like the Škoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. Measuring 3,995 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,566 mm, the Kylaq is designed to offer compactness without compromising on space. The exterior features Škoda’s new Modern Solid design language, highlighted by a prominent black Techdeck with 3D ribs and precise daytime running lights (DRLs).

Powertrain

Under the hood, the Kylaq is powered by a 1.0-liter TSI engine that produces 85 kW (115 hp) and 178 Nm of torque. Customers have the option to choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, catering to diverse driving preferences.

Škoda Kylaq : Safety Features

Škoda has put a strong emphasis on safety with the Kylaq, equipping it with over 25 active and passive safety features as standard across all variants. These include six airbags, Multi-Collision Brake, Roll Over Protection, Motor Slip Regulation, Electronic Differential Lock, XDS+, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Interior and Comfort

The interior of the Kylaq is designed with comfort and convenience in mind. It features segment-first six-way electric seats with ventilation for both the driver and front passenger. The vehicle also offers a luggage compartment capacity of 446 liters with the rear seats upright, providing ample space for passengers and cargo.

Pricing and Availability

The Škoda Kylaq’s pricing starts at ₹7.89 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant. Bookings opened on December 2, 2024, with deliveries scheduled to commence on January 27, 2025.

Market Positioning

As Škoda’s first model in the sub-4-metre segment, which accounts for nearly 50% of the Indian car market, the Kylaq represents a significant expansion of the brand’s SUV lineup in India. It joins models like the Kodiaq and Kushaq, aiming to attract a broad range of customers seeking a compact yet feature-rich SUV.

Naming and Development

The name “Kylaq” was selected through a social media campaign, reflecting Škoda’s engagement with its customer base. The vehicle is the third model developed and produced locally in India, following the Kushaq and Slavia, underscoring Škoda’s commitment to the Indian market.

In summary, the Škoda Kylaq combines modern design, efficient performance, and comprehensive safety features, making it a compelling option in India’s subcompact SUV segment.
